Liggett Family Marriages

Marriage affidavits, certificates, and intents.  Some are not much more then a line in a ledger book hand written, others contain parents names.  Throughout history the format has changed a great deal.  Some are hard to read, but all are interesting.  These Liggett family marriages include both the Liggett men who took wives and gave them their names and The Liggett women who married others.

Newspaper Obituaries

 Though there's not date when this obituary appeared or what paper, it indicates word came from Florida to Marion, so we'll assume it was The Marion Star.  This is the obituary for Glenn William Smith.  He lived to be 92.

 This obituary is for Gladys Lucille Liggett Smith wife of above Glenn Smith.  Lucille is the name she went by and she was his first wife.  Again we'll assume this was The Marion Star Newspaper, and it probably appeared a day or two after her death.

This obituary was found on line at Find a Grave, again no date of when it appeared or which paper, but a reasonable assumption it was the Marion Star.  

Richard's obit was found in a search on line, tagged with date and newspaper.

 Charles Liggett's obituary was obtained from the Columbus Metropolitan Library's archives department on microfilm.

 Clarence Liggett's obituary was also obtained through microfilm archives from The Columbus Metroplitan Library.

Branch Liggetts obituary was also obtained through the microfilm archives from The Columbus Library, but came in a slightly different format so the header isn't shown here; but when it was in PDF format it indicated it was from page 6 E, June 26, 1992 Columbus Dispatch.

Obituaries even for non direct family line members are a wonderful source of information.  They often give you clues about other family members and where they lived.  You can tell who survived and who preceeded them which is helpful.  Sometimes knowing the cemetery is of value, it's a good assumption to look in the same cemetery for someone you may not be able to find.  Sometimes to, the information about which funeral home they used can be of value when looking for other family members.

Birth Documentation

Climbing ones tree is interesting, very much like doing detective work and solving puzzles, except you need more then clues and hunches...you need some good documentation.

Branch Liggett born Dec 21, 1898 in Canaan Township in Athens County, Ohio to Walter L. Liggett and Agnes M. Hull.

Carl Ayers the son of Mary Anna McCombs and John J. Ayers born in Scioto Township, Delaware County, Ohio on April 10th, 1889.

Charles Liggett born June 9th, 1897 in Canaan Township in Athens County  to Walter and Agnes (Hull) Liggett.  AND though hard to read there's Edith Liggett born September 19, 1897 to possibly A. M. Liggett (or F. M. Liggett), and I believe Florina McPherson?  More research needs to be done on this portion of the family.

Chester Ivan McCombs, the son of Hiram and Maggie Grandstaff McCombs born Feb 19, 1894 in Magnestic Springs, Union County, Ohio.

Clarence Liggett born September 1, 1900 in Canaan Township in Athens County, the son of Walter and Agnes (Hull) Liggett.

Donald Leigh Smith the son of Wallace Hugh Smith and Maggie (Spurgeon) Smith born October 18, 1895 in Marion.

Glenn Walter Smith the son of Wallace Hugh Smith and Maggie (Spurgeon) Smith born May 21, 1902 in Agosta, Ohio.

Isaac William McCombs the son of Mary Ann (Shirk) and John Grey McCombs born Dec 7, 1872 near Magnetic Springs, Union County Ohio.

Leroy McCombs birth record is barely readable.  The actual data was obtained from a transcript, which presumably was done before the film of this book became so faded.  He was born June 3, 1896 the son of Maggie (Grandstaff) McCombs and Hiram McCombs in Magnetic Springs, Ohio.

Lucille Liggett was born in Athens County on Feb 28th, 1902, the daughter of Walter Liggett and Agnes (Hull) Liggett.  Also note, other family members listed, Harry Morton Liggett the son of Flora McPherson and Alexander Liggett on Feb 16th, 1902.  This is readable and so helps us fill in the not so sure of above speculation of Florina and A.M. or F. M. Liggett.

Myrtle Ayers born in Scioto Township, Delaware County, Ohio on Jan 13, 1900 is the daughter of John J. Ayers and Mary Anna (McCombs) Ayers.

Sylvia M. McCombs is the daughter of Ida (Sutton) McCombs and Charles McCombs born Sept. 21, 1887 in Magnetic Springs, Ohio.
